Mint Juleps are about as prolific at the Kentucky Derby as hats. While I’m not a big bourbon drinker, there’s something about this refreshing cocktail that seems just right for the scene at Churchill Downs. And I enjoy the design of a classic bar and glassware so much, I even remodeled a part of my house in Santa Monica to accommodate an old school speakeasy style bar.



I’m still working on my mixology skills but here’s a recipe for you to tackle this Southern classic on your own.


16 mint leaves
1 teaspoon sugar (to muddle mint leaves)
4 ounces Bourbon
3/4 ounce agave nectar
Crushed Ice
2 sprigs of fresh mint as garnish

In cocktail shaker, muddle mint leaves and sugar until leaves are well shredded. Add bourbon to cocktail shaker.  Let mint, sugar and bourbon mixture sit for 5-7 minutes (this will bring out additional mint flavors). Add agave nectar to mint, bourbon, sugar mixture.  Shake well.
Fill 2 old fashioned glasses with crushed ice.  Strain cocktail into glasses.  Top with mint as garnish.
